Frank Delaney
As Loren Ledin said of him in
the Ventura County Star, "Frank
Delaney shunned the
spotlight, but not the responsibility." Frank, who
died May 3, 2004, at the age of 91, was
one of the founding members of the Ventura County Sports
Hall of Fame and continued
active involvement into the last year of his life.
Frank was born on October 15, 1912
in Brooklyn, New York. He attended George
Williams College, the University of Chicago, and graduated
from Utah State University. He
served in the U. S. Navy in World War II and was awarded
the Silver Star for gallantry in
action during the amphibious assault on Sicily. After moving
to California, he served as
executive director of the Ventura County American Lung
Association for 37 years, retiring
in 1985.
Fellow committee members remember
Frank as a gentleman and truly a "gentle
man." He made many contributions but always quietly,
without any desire for recognition
for himself. He most enjoyed employing his love for photography
by taking pictures of new
inductees and the many student athletes honored by the
Sports Hall of Fame.
Frank is survived by his wife,
Dorothy, and son, Bob.
